The Ripon Connection

Liz Wright sent me this image of the Dean of Ripon and reminded me of the Lewis Carroll connection.
Lewis Carroll's father became a residentiary canon of the Cathedral in 1852. During his many visits to Ripon, Carroll wrote Ye Carpette Knyghte and several pages of Through the Looking-Glass, as well as a number of mathematical papers.

The Dean of Ripon Cathedral, John Dobson, leads the way in the annual pancake race with children from Ripon Cathedral School, North Yorkshire.  The start of the race is marked by the ringing of the cathedral’s ancient Pancake Bell.
