Alice At The Rathbone

Another exhibition which we hope you made was June Lornie’s exhibition of her illustrations for Alice In Wonderland.  The exhibition was staged in the Rathbone Studio in Argyle Street Birkenhead close to Hamilton Square.  It is a little gem run by Janet Holmes primarily as a studio in which she creates her distinctive ceramics and where she teaches the art and science of making pottery. At the front of the studio there is an exhibition room where she not only displays her own and her students work but also uses the wall space to exhibit other artists’ paintings.  

This time it was June‘s turn to fill the walls with her popular Alice pictures.   The panorama at the top shows you the exhibition with June in the middle.  Just click on it to see a full screen interactive panorama.

The series consist of twenty-eight mostly, large paintings which, all together, would have been too big for the Studio space.  So, June put just six of the original works on display with smaller framed prints of the others.   To accompany June’s work Janet had had her students produce ceramic works on an Alice in Wonderland theme.  See Alison Heathcote's imaginative version of The Caterpillar and Annmarie Jones's Whiter Rabbit.  Also take a look at June’s Cheshire cat with, below it, the ceramic Cheshire Cat grin produced by Janet Holmes herself.  We wanted to buy it but someone beat us to it.   The private view had a selection of cakes and tarts suitably inscribed to fit in with the occasion.

The exhibition was opened by Cathy Roberts well known in Merseyside, for her storytelling, her musical Moggys, her book shop ‘Literally’ and  for her involvement in all things pirate.
